Summer Farewell

Towering tangerine blossoms sway in a gust of September wind.

Gazing upwards, their fiery glow is striking when set against the sky’s blue hue.

A bumble bee floats from violet blossom to violet blossom,

Hugging each flower as it lands.

A chirping swallow hops up and down the fuchsia colored branch of a withering plant

Though dry and past its prime,

Thriving bursts of marigolds surround it in vain.

In the distance, past the Chinese Dogwood trees

A cranberry fleece blanket is spread out over lush green grass

Everything is in full bloom - a kissing couple’s paradise.

Flowers bask in the sunlight as couples walk hand in hand

When the sun hides behind clouds, the air chills

Sounds seem hushed, the sights become dimmed.

Engulfed by green – all is quiet

The constant hum of crickets almost goes unnoticed

A flock of birds soars steadily over the tallest treetops

My eyes squint as I look towards the setting sun

The warmth on my face - a summer farewell

Banana Tree

My authoritative presence engulfs – You, looming below.

Towering naturally, my arms stretch towards the blue sea – a cloud swims by.

You are the Bleeding Hearts of the twenty-first century -

Emanating lust, tragedy, unpredictability.

I stand tall while your blossoms of sadness wither and droop.

My branches shade the golden orb-like nourishment that my sturdy leaves lovingly embrace.

All the while, your petals being to fall – you ache –

As the slightest October breeze cools me,

You billow, and now stand naked in a bath of pink silk covering your feet.

Once my summer sweetheart, my amity –

You drift in and out of my life – so fleeting, so temporary.
